In the story The Devil and Tom Walker there are many inferences. To start off I think Tom was in his early 50`s and his wife was too. I think that Tom`s wife was a theif. Quote "Whatever the woman could lay hands on she hid away". In the house I believe no one has ever used the chimney. "No smoke ever curled from it's chimney". Tom Walker was a very nosie guy. "Her husband was continually prying about to detect her secret hoards". I believe that the treasure was once owned by a man named Crowninshield. "He recollected a mighty rich man of that name".
Tom was not scared of the devil. "He did not even fear the devil".
The man that went went by the name of old scratch you can infer was the devil. "He totally disappeared". You can infer that the devil killed his wife or had something to do with it. "He even felt something
like gratitude towards the black woodsman, who he considered it a
kindness".
He was talking about the devil because you can infer the devil killed his wife. Tom cared very little for his wife. The author also said that Tom consoled himself for the loss
of his property with the loss of his wife.
Kam remember to throw the questions back in your answers. You should have said the author directly or indirectly stated that Tom cared very little for his wife by saying " He even felt something like gratitude towards the black woodsman, who he considered it a kindness". The author also said that Tom consoled himself for the loss of his property with the loss of his wife.
